Savannah.GNU.org switched its policy

Today Savannah.GNU.org switched its policy about the licenses of the hosted projects.
Since today every project must release its documentation under the GNU Free Documentation License or any other compatible license.
So now everything had to be released under the GNU GPL (the source) and the GNU FDL (the documentation[s]), or any other compatible license, to get approved on Savannah.GNU.org.

Sylvain Beucler wrote on @SV-hackers:
_"We will require project submitters to place their documentation under a GFDL-compatible license.

We will also suggest that existing projects dual-license their existing, non-GFDL documentation."_

The whole stuff happends because Debian restricted their "view" about the GNU FDL, because "concerns regarding the compatibility of the GNU Free Documentation License with the Debian Free Software Guidelines came to the attention of the debian-legal mailing list."
For more details have a look at

Then: Good night!

The Linux kernel and the GPLv3

Linus Torvalds, founder of the Linux kernel, wrote Wed, 25 Jan 2006 on the LKML:

"The Linux kernel has always been under the GPL v2. Nothing else has ever been valid."

The full story is, that Linus doesn't accept GPLv3 for his kernel. That's why the GPLv3 draft says explicitly:

"Regardless of any other provision of this License, no permission is given to distribute covered works that illegally invade users' privacy, nor for modes of distribution that deny users that run covered works the full exercise of the legal rights granted by this License.".

Even you had to open private keys (for the DRM) so that every user can run your program propperly. That's something Linus doesn't want.

Linus wrote on the LKML furthermore: "The Linux kernel has never stated that [GPLv2 or any later version] in general. Some authors have chosen to use the suggested FSF boilerplate (including the 'any later version' language), but the kernel in general never has."

So seems like Linux never goes GPLv3 or to say it in other words, the FSF goes with the GPLv3 an other way then Linus wantes to go...

Some links about this topic:

At the end: I don't believe in things Linus said in his posting. The GPLv2 says (and Linus copied it into his COPYING file): "If the Program does not specify a version number of this License, you may choose any version ever published by the Free Software Foundation."(9.)

I think parts of Linux may be redistributed and modified under the GPLv3 as well... but this may happen to the whole kernel, too.

Favicons

This night I created some favicon(s) for my websites (kickino.org, nanofortnight.org) and this blog.

And I should tell you that it really suxx^2! That's why every web-browser asks my apache server to serve a favicon.ico for the site(s). But he cannot, because they didn't exist, so he wrote an error message in his log file. That's really annoying.
Another point is that the favicons must be 32x32 but support only 8bit, 256colors (seems at least to me like). So you had to put the content of your webpage in one image and then scale it. Really funny. :-/

And who startet all the stuff? I think you know who did it... but if you don't - find it out!

Some links about this topic:

Almost forgotten to tell you this:
Support of Favicons since Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0-Beta (1998)

Chemnitzer Linux Tage 2006

Hello everybody out there. Hopefully you all had a better day than I had today, but nevertheless there is always one positiv point.

Since today you can find on the website of the Chemnitzer Linux Tage the official list of the presentations.
I had a quick look at it, and there are some presentations, which could be really funny - e.g.
"GPL 3.0 - Die neue Lizenz fr freie Software"
"Nutzer motivieren - oder: Warum der BOFH (fast) nicht lustig ist"
and many more. :-)

Two other points I realized there are the Linux Nacht / Night and the search for ways to Chemnitz.

Update: I created my personal presentation list.
If you are living in my area and if you are interested in the CLT as well, feel free to contact me.

nanofortnight.org

Today is a great day for my server (nanofortnight.org).

    basti@Woody:~$ host nanofortnight.org
    host nanofortnight.org has address 81.3.21.3

    basti@Woody:~$ host 81.3.21.3
    3.21.3.81.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer nanofortnight.org

Seems like my provider accepted my wish for a PTR record for my IP. I'm really really happy about this. :-)

Project 'Pi' or 'Pi-Calculator'

Hello everybody out there in the dark and cold(!) night. If you had a look at the weather forecast you could see that the temperatures in the night could be around -20 degrees celsium here :-/.

Today I worked mainly on the project website of "my" latest project Pi. It becomes a really huge page with lots of information about the project.
If you are interested in this project, feel free to contribute and/or mail us via our mailing list.

ChaosMeeting 2006-01-20

Yesterday was another ChaosMeeting of our little group at the Herder Gymnasium Nordhausen.
The presentation of Markus about the "Artificial Intelligence" was skipped and we talked a little bit about MacOS X and the free software project Celestia.

A funny story about Celestia was that it is really difficult to zoom into space. That's why Pascal watched five(?) minutes into black space and waited for Sol. But Sol was gone long time ago because of the high time value.
Another difficult thing was to find the Cassini orbiter in our Milky Way.
We think it's even not implemented in Celestia, but if you find it, please send us a screenshot.

If you are interested in Celestia (a free space simulation that lets you explore our universe in three dimensions), you can have an additional look at the screenshots on its website.

And now: Good night everybody and enjoy your weekend!

wikipedia.de closed

Hello out there.
Today the domain wikipedia.de was closed, you can access the german Wikipedia only via de.wikipedia.org now.

The reason of that is a "legal issue" because of a Wikipedia article.
An article about Tron in the german Wikipedia execute a conflict between the family of Tron and the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. That's why they closed the domain wikipedia.de

The main point of the conflict is that the german article about Tron includes his full personal name. The family don't want the Wikipedia to publish the full name of Tron.
You can have a look at the edit war of this article.

Schiller's Music

My mp3-decoder says now:
"Playing MPEG stream from Schiller Mit Heppner - Dream Of You.mp3 ..."
I know it is very old, but if you know Schiller, you also know, this kind of music is never too old.

"Playing MPEG stream from Schiller mit Thomas D - Die Nacht.mp3 ..."
The perfect music to forget the past few hours, cool down and just relax - even if the lyrics are in German, it is great for everybody to feel the vibes of it.
