World Summit on the Information Society

Inevitably, I have "looked up the food chain" when trying to sort out the stream of dangerous copyright laws which are being created. In keeping with the theory of "new enclosures" that I first heard at the ESF 2004, it seems that the big copyright holders go as high as they can and are always moving upwards, because those are the places where it's hardest for ordinary citizens to change.

For copyright and software patents, there's work now going on at the command of the United Nations Secretary General by a Working Group on Internet Governance. Possible next meetings - Geneva, April 18 - Geneva, June 14. Some members of the working group came from the civil society group of the World Summit on the Information Society, but their appointment looks unjust to me. Swiss diplomat Markus Kummer had a pivotal role. I am looking further to see what happens.

Other Groups

FSF Europe

They are a member of WSIS-CS and their president is connector of the "Patents, Copyright and Trademarks" (PCT) subgroup.

Communication Rights

There was an autonomous event at the first WSIS (covered by [indymedia](http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/actions/2003/wsis/)). It looks like another will be planned for [WSIS II](http://docs.indymedia.org/view/Global/WSISII). [CRIS working space?](http://www.crisinfo.org/content/view/full/49)
